Strong mental health isn’t just the absence of mental health problems. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. It is vital that you pay attention to what your body and mind need. For me, yoga has always been an important part of my day. It gives you some time to mentally relax and recharge the mind.
#1 benefit of yoga. Reducing Anxiety: Numerous studies have found that yoga may decrease anxiety symptoms, including performance anxiety. In one study (2013) with adolescent musicians, yoga decreased anxiety in group and solo performances.
Some enjoy the more physical active styles (yang) like vinyasa or bikram. Others may enjoy a more slower paced practice (yin) or a combination of both. Regardless of the type of yoga you choose, its numerous physical and psychological benefits should be remembered.
Fun Fact: The practice of yoga has been thought to date back to pre-vedic Indian traditions; possibly in the Indus valley civilization around 3000 BCE.
