A draft of some paper I wrote for a class.
Abstract:
Urban green space can be defined as diverse zones of open air areas – ranging from cemeteries and playing fields to gardens and large parks - covered primarily by grass, trees, and other flora. Urban green space, particularly large public parks, can provide a myriad of benefits to the urban environment and society and are often reputed as such. In this paper, the role of large urban parks in the nature of cities will be explored via the lenses of economics, broad societal impacts, and environmental factors; drawing from urban metabolism and urban political ecology. Stockholm’s Djurgården will be the case study, but the wider discussion will incorporate other urban parks around the world as well.
