Cuckoo Catfish Description: A very attractively patterned catfish which makes an ideal and interesting addition to a Rift Lake setup of Malawi or Tanganyika cichlids. They are often more active in the daytime than many other Synodontis, especially if a small group is kept. This fish is named for the method it uses to breed. The Cuckoo catfish will lay eggs among the eggs of African cichlid mouthbrooders. Be careful because these eggs will hatch before the cichlid eggs and consume them!

Tank Mate Compatibility: This fish does well with African Cichlids from any lake.

Cuckoo Catfish Breeding & Spawning: Has been accomplished in an aquarium. The Cuckoo Catfish lays its eggs at the same time as certain Haplochromis species. The catfish eggs are also taken into the female Hap's mouth, where they are incubated with the other eggs. The catfish hatch first and consume the other eggs while the female Hap protects the catfish fry as if they were her own.

Determining Cuckoo Catfish Sex: Can only be sexed by venting. Females have a round papilla, where as the male have a pointed papilla that is approximately 3-5 mm, and gives the appearance of slightly triangular in shape.
